Military Affairs Committee

The mission of the Military Affairs Committee of the Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce is to maintain and continually improve the relationship between the military and civilian communities. It is a vital, informal communications link among Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, Marine Corps Base Cherry Point, Coast Guard Sector, North Carolina, The Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce, The Towns of Swansboro, Emerald Isle, Bogue, Cedar Point, Cape Carteret and Peletier, and State and Federal legislators.

The Military Affairs Committee will accomplish its mission through a series of activities to include dinners, activities and meetings designed to remind its members and the citizenry that it is a privilege for this community to serve as the home of Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, The United States Coast Guard Stations and the Fleet Marine Force units stationed here.

Annual Military Appreciation Day!

There’s no doubt about it. The Swansboro area loves its military neighbors… and they LOVE showing it!  In fact, this will be the 16th year that the Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee, teaming up with Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro, will present its Military Appreciation Day - June 1 at the popular, seaside state park. All active duty, retired personnel, veterans, and their families are invited to the all-day event, including free food, ferry rides to Bear Island, and lots of games and activities for the whole family to enjoy!  All activities and food served are free to the military visitors and their family members.

The ferry ride to Bear Island, a barrier island just off the coast of Swansboro, also a part of the park, takes approximately 20 minutes one way.  Once there, visitors can ride the waves, collect shells, build sand castles, or just plain relax on this pristine beach.  Ferry rides are all free of charge.

There’s nothing like a local magician to make a kid smile…unless it’s a bouncy house or a HUGE blow-up slide!  Now we’re talking!   Or maybe a “Touch Tank” brought by the North Carolina Coastal Federation and an Aquatic Life Exhibit will capture the little ones attention….and yours!  Face painting…ferry rides…arts and crafts… it’s all here!  And what would a party be without a little cornhole and live music from local favorites.

All that fun can make a kid of any age hungry…so grab a hot dog and a nice, juicy piece of watermelon! Or snack on some hot and salty buttered popcorn as you breathe the salty sea air.  Pizza, chips and drinks will also be available.  Then sit back and enjoy the water view!  All food and drinks are free to military personnel and their families.

Vendors offering various services for active duty, veterans, and retired personnel will be available to answer any questions about their programs.

Off-site parking will be available at Saint Mildred Catholic Church, 653 Old Hammock Road.  A shuttle service will be offered to military personnel and families free of charge.  Visitors parking inside the state park for Military Appreciation Day can catch a quick ride from a passing golf cart to the main festivities.  Don’t try to tip the driver…these rides are also free of charge.
